What is Netball?

There are seven players in a netball team. They are:

The court is divided into three thirds. Two goal thirds and a centre third. In each goal third is a semi-circle known as the goal circle. In the centre third there is a small centre circle. Each player has to start in their designated third.

The game starts with a centre pass. After a goal is scored the game restarts with a centre pass. The centre pass alternates between the two teams regardless of who has scored.


The player with the ball must release it within 3 seconds. They must not run with the ball. They can’t pass or bounce to themselves.

Any player marking a player with the ball must be 3 feet away from their landing foot before they can defend using their arms. You can’t hit or snatch a ball out of someone’ hands.

Players cannot move into areas that they aren’t designated to (offside). GS and GK are allowed in their goal third only. GA and GD are allowed in their goal third and the centre third. WA and WD are allowed in their goal third, excluding the goal circle, and the centre third. C is allowed in all three thirds but not in the goal circles.


If the ball leaves the court, the opposing team get a throw in from the spot it left court. A ball cannot be thrown from one goal third to the opposite third. A backline pass must be caught within the goal third before moving down the court.
